UK financial regulators are examining how many listed companies are set to issue warnings about their ability to survive the pandemic, as they seek to assess the impact on markets should share prices plummet. Auditors have warned that there is a backlog of annual reports that are likely to question the ability of companies in the retail, hospitality, leisure and travel industries to continue trading as a going concern for the next 12 months. A flood of going concern warnings or qualified audit opinions — in which an auditor says there are misstatements or that they could not obtain enough evidence to sign off the accounts with a clean bill of health — could spook markets.
The tiny number of hedge funds managed by women have outperformed their male counterparts through the coronavirus crisis, new data show, highlighting the industry’s long-running lack of progress in fixing its gender imbalance. Hedge funds run by women lost 3.5 per cent in the first four months of this year, as measured by Chicago-based data group HFR’s Women Access index. “In the round [female managers] appear to have a better approach to managing risk,” said Russell Barlow, global head of alternative investment strategies at investment firm Aberdeen Standard.
The graduate jobs market has been turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic. As students prepare to enter the fray post lockdown, they face an uncertain time as the mid- to long-term economic damage remains unknown. Internships, typically part of an assessment for future job offers, are being cancelled, deferred or made entirely virtual.
A UK government review into the impact of new US sanctions on Huawei will report back within weeks, officials have said, as they warned the curbs could have “very, very serious” implications for the Chinese company’s planned role in supplying 5G networks in Britain. The emergency review — which started just days after the US announced new export controls on Huawei last month — is being undertaken by the National Cyber Security Centre, a branch of UK signals intelligence agency GCHQ. The US sanctions and the UK review gives British prime minister Boris Johnson the opportunity to execute a U-turn on his contentious decision in January to grant Huawei a limited role as a supplier of telecoms equipment for the country’s 5G mobile phone networks.
Zoom, Skype, Slack and their likes were there to bolster the productivity of people who can work from home, the very knowledge workers whose jobs tech was meant to threaten next. The digital revolution — a world of work without workplaces and management without managers — owes much to a theory dreamt up by Frederick Taylor, considered by many to be the first management guru, in the early 20th century.
It is a virtual reality exercise used to assess graduates applying for a technology role at Accenture, the professional services group. The advantage of introducing VR to a candidate assessment programme is that “seeing people in action is a better indicator of their potential”, says Adrian Love, Accenture’s recruitment director for the UK and Ireland. The virtual world is all encompassing, so “your brain cannot fake it”, he adds.

Australia's three decades of uninterrupted prosperity are coming to an abrupt end as the global coronavirus pandemic crashes one of its most lucrative sources of income – immigration. Net immigration, including international students and those on skilled worker visas, is expected to fall 85% in the fiscal year to June 2021, curbing demand for everything from cars and property to education and wedding rings. Gurmeet Tuli, who owns a jewellery store in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta, said his business is already hurting in a neighbourhood which is home to tens of thousands of migrants.

Asian shares pushed to three-month highs on Monday as progress on opening up economies helped offset jitters over riots in U.S. cities and unease over Washington's power struggle with Beijing. E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 recovered early losses to be up 0.1%, having been down 1% in early trade, while safe-haven gold pared an early rise to be up 0.4% at $1,733 an ounce. DEFENDER, CLEMENT LENGLET STORY: Barcelona will recommence their bid to defend the Spanish title on Saturday June 13 away to Real Mallorca after a three-month pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while Real Madrid will host Eibar on June 14, organisers La Liga announced on Sunday. The season kick backs into action with a local derby between Sevilla and Real Betis on June 11 and there will be fixtures for the following seven days, with Barca hosting Leganes on June 16 and Real playing at home to Valencia on June 18. As in the Bundesliga, which earlier in May became the first major European league to start up again after being disrupted by the pandemic, all La Liga matches until the end of the season will take place without spectators. Real Madrid will play their remaining six home games at the 6,000-capacity Estadio Alfredo di Stefano based at their training ground, a league source confirmed, as they are currently renovating their Santiago Bernabeu home. Levante will also be making adjustments to their Ciutat de Valencia stadium when the season starts up again and confirmed last week they will play their final home games in the town of La Nucia, more than 150 kilometres away from their usual ground. Barca were leading Real by two points after 27 matches when the campaign was postponed back in March due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Organisers have only released scheduling details for the first two rounds of fixtures although La Liga chief Javier Tebas confirmed that there will be matches every day of the week until the season is completed on July 19. Tebas also gave details of a planned tribute to those who have died from the pandemic, whereby fans will be encouraged to make audio recordings of themselves applauding the victims, which will then be transmitted in the stadium and broadcast on television in the 20th minute of each match. The Spanish top-flight is poised to be the second of Europe's top five leagues to resume after the Bundesliga, with England's Premier League re-starting on June 17 and Italy's Serie A kicking off again on June 20.
